New Drug That Treats Prostate Cancer Approved for Use in Mexico i24News

An innovative drug invented in Israel for treating prostate cancer has been approved by Mexico’s health authority.

The therapy, developed at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot and clinically developed in collaboration with Steba Biotech (Luxembourg), focuses on the treatment of early-stage prostate cancer.

The therapy, which involves a laser and a novel drug, TOOKAD Soluble, was approved after a successful Phase III clinical trial held in Mexico, Peru and Panama involving 80 patients.

The trial confirmed the high rate of local cures and minimal side effects already reported in Phase II clinical trials, as evidenced by negative biopsies and maintenance of patients’ potency, continence and overall quality of life.

The marketing approval in Mexico comes in the wake of the recent completion of a second Phase III clinical trial in Europe.

The Weizmann Institute's Prof. Yoram Salomon of the Biological Regulation Department and Prof. Avigdor Scherz of the Plant and Environmental Sciences Department were the brains behind the new therapy.
