Agustin Basave, the chairman of Mexico's leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, vowed to step down if he was prevented from entering into an alliance with the conservative National Action Party, or PAN, in the Gulf state of Veracruz.

"The only way to get the PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party) out of Veracruz is with an opposition bloc," Basave said in response to questions about his efforts to form a pact with the PAN.

Basave said those who know him were aware that his vow to resign was not an idle threat or blackmail.

High-level PRI officials want to buy PRD members to prevent the formation of an alliance and a minority within the National Executive Committee wants to avoid negotiations with the PAN, Basave said.

"It's my decision. If they take away my authorization to do something that was authorized before, then I'll resign. If they take away authorization for my negotiating strategy, then I have nothing to do in the chairmanship of the PRD," Basave said.
