A senior official of the Mexican government says Mexico has opened a money laundering investigation into the actress who helped Hollywood star Sean Penn conduct an interview with drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

In the interview published on Tuesday by daily newspaper El Universal, Attorney General Arely Gomez said "there are indications" that actress Kate del Castillo may have used money from Guzman to help finance her tequila business. Rolling Stone magazine published an article by Penn, which was based on a secret meeting with Guzman, while the drug lord was on the run.

The meeting was also attended by del Castillo.
