The FBI shut down “Playpen”, "the largest remaining known child pornography hidden service in the world" after hacking into the Dark Web.
Instead of shutting down the site immediately the FBI took “unprecedented” measures and ran the site via it’s own servers while deploying a hacking tool know as a network investigative technique (NIT).
The FBI was able to identify at least 1,300 IP addresses belonging to visitors of the site leading to potentially 1,500 court cases from one investigation.
