Ecocide in Tajamar Malecon Cancun (ExpedienteQR)

Mexico’s Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, and its state committee in the southeastern state of Quintana Roo have filed a complaint with the federal Attorney General’s Office over the destruction of the Tajamar mangrove forest for a real-estate project.

The complaint, filed Monday, named officials with the Environment and Natural Resources Secretariat; the Profepa environmental protection agency; the National Trust Fund for Tourism Development, or Fonatur; Quintana Roo Gov. Roberto Borge; and Benito Juarez Mayor Paul Carrillo, the PRD said.

The center-left opposition party said those authorities were responsible for the “ecocide” that, according to non-governmental organizations, destroyed the habitat of protected species such as crocodiles, birds, iguanas, frogs, fish and crustaceans.

Activists tried unsuccessfully last week to prevent the clearing of the area for the Malecon Tajamar project in the resort city of Cancun, the municipal seat of Benito Juarez.

That project, which the PRD is seeking to halt, will involve construction of apartments, offices and recreational installations on the 69 hectares (170 acres) of land where the mangrove forest used to stand.
