Obama to Make Historic Visit to Cuba in March (VOA News)

POTUS's announcement caps off a big week in U.S.-Cuba relations. Here's what you need to know about the future of American travel to its long-isolated neighbor.

It's amazing the power one tweet can have. Earlier this week, President Obama changed the course of U.S.-Cuban history with these words: "Next month, I'll travel to Cuba to advance our progress and efforts that can improve the lives of the Cuban people." On March 21, he'll become the first American president to visit the island nation (specifically, Havana) since Calvin Coolidge in 1928—and with that decision, the Obama administration punctuated an already exciting week in U.S.-Cuban relations.

In addition to a road map for the expanded sale of good and services from the U.S. to Cuba, the U.S. government also just kicked off a competition for one of the most sought-after prizes in commercial aviation: to be among the first airlines to offer scheduled flights Cuba, off limits for a half-century. The historic pact signed in Havana this week will allow up to 110 daily flights linking cities in the U.S. with Cuba’s ten international airports; twenty flights a day will head to Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport (HAV) alone.

That sounds impressive, but just how this will all play out in practical terms is far from clear: Despite orders for renovations to double the capacity of HAV, Cuba’s airports may not be prepared for a huge influx of visitors—and besides, U.S. travelers still aren't permitted to visit the island as tourists.
