Mayakoba Resort: A Luxury Resort with Foundation in Ecology (GLP Films)

As the boat snakes beneath tangled mangroves toward a ruby-throated bird, I wriggle against the railing and try to position my camera. For a moment, I feel like a stealthy National Geographic photographer hunting dangerous prey.

Here at the Mayakoba luxury eco-resort just north of Playa del Carmen, the bird regarding me with a teenager’s sullen disinterest is actually a Plain Chachalaca. It is quite small with a mocking tone not unlike a young David Spade. “Cha-cha-la, cha-cha-la,” it cries, as unlikely to physically attack as, well, David Spade.

Still, I feel nature’s hot breath on my neck as we glide silently upstream on a high-tech electric boat, my finger twitching on the camera’s shutter.

I’m taking the resort’s wildlife photo safari workshop and aside from tips on technique, I’m learning a thing or two about upscale jungle living.

If nature is red in tooth and claw, at Mayakoba, it is tastefully appointed.

The 590-acre wildlife sanctuary along Mexico’s Riviera Maya is home to three luxury hotels — Fairmont Mayakoba, Rosewood Mayakoba and Banyan Tree Mayakoba. Each offers a photo safari.
