The leadership of the Mexican Senate requested that the lower house of the Congress open impeachment proceedings against Javier Duarte, the embattled governor of the state of Veracruz, over the alleged misappropriation of public funds.

The Board of the Senate, acting on a request by senators from the National Action Party, known as the PAN, also requested that the Attorney General's Office immediately open an investigation into a possible crimes committed by Duarte and his associates, including sitting a former lawmakers.

Rumors began circulating Tuesday night that Duarte would soon request a temporary leave from his post, however the governor himself laid those rumors to rest via his Twitter account. His term is set to conclude in ten months.

Duarte, however, appeared to be quickly losing any political support he once had.

The head of Duarte's party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party, known as the PRI, said that the governor would need to be “held accountable.”
