Update: Jailed Chief Nestora Salgado Could be Released Next Week (Mexico News Daily)

Pressure is mounting on the Mexican government to release a Renton woman imprisoned there for more than 30 months.

Nestora Salgado was arrested in August 2013 and accused of kidnapping while leading an indigenous law enforcement group in her village of Olinala in the Mexican state of Guerrero. The group works to protect the community against organized crime.

According to the International Human Rights Clinic at Seattle University School of Law, Guerrero law and the Mexican Constitution guarantee the rights of indigenous communities to form their own security institutions. Salgado's group was officially part of state law enforcement and had the express approval of Guerrero's governor, the clinic states.

...A Mexican judge cleared Salgado of charges last year, but related state charges have kept her locked up. She has dual citizenship in Mexico and the United States.

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which is an international panel of five independent human rights experts, ruled earlier this year that Salgado's incarceration is illegal and arbitrary and called for her release.
