Mexico gained more money from remittances than from oil sales in 2015 (CCTV America)
January remittances of funds by Mexicans working abroad shot up nearly 19% over the same month last year, reaching a total of 1.9 billion pesos, or US $106 million, according to the Bank of México.
It was the biggest January increase for money sent home since 2006 when the total was up 29%, and the biggest January total ever recorded. The figure was down 12.5% from December.
The average amount sent was $298, up 6.8% from $279 the year before.
Most remittances are sent by Mexicans living in the United States, whose number has been estimated to be 11 million.
