Researchers say they've pinpointed the first gene linked with gray hair. They said the discovery was culled from a genetic analysis of more than 6,000 people of mixed ancestry in Latin America.

The finding proves that genes play a role in graying hair. Study author Kaustubh Adhikari, from University College London, in England, said "We already know several genes involved in balding and hair color, but this is the first time a gene for graying has been identified in humans."

The researchers said that along with possibly helping find ways to delay hair graying, the gene might improve understanding of aging."
