Acapulco’s new tourist police assistants are not armed with guns, but with accessories that are no less dangerous. A group of women in their 20s provide a striking contrast to the machine-gun toting federales that patrol the city in black ski masks. Many of these newly minted guides are just out of college, and armed with fuchsia lipstick, slim-fit polo shirts and a 100-watt smile.

Acapulco’s police chief says their job is to help visitors contact law enforcement, or those who are simply looking for tourist information. Acapulco’s chief for public security Manuel Flores says hiring an all-female police gives off a friendlier feel to cops who are often associated with corruption. He added women are more approachable than men and are less likely to accept bribes.
