Mexico has vast expertise in managing disaster risk that offers an example for other countries. Since the country's 1985 earthquake, which killed over 4,000 people, Mexico has gradually learned the lessons and managed to considerably reduce disaster losses, enacting new disaster risk reduction laws, building safer hospitals and schools and working closely with the private sector.
In October 2015, the government took rapid action to mobilize the entire country in order to limit the impact of Cyclone Patricia, considered as the strongest storm system ever to hit Mexico. Multiple early warnings were issued by President Enrique Peña Nieto himself, saving thousands of exposed people, who were evacuated safely with zero casualties.
