Gerardo Gaudiano (center) claimed victory Sunday (Notimex)
The Party of the Democratic Revolution can claim a small bit of momentum heading into the 12 critical gubernatorial campaigns after winning the special municipal election in Tabasco on Sunday.
PRD candidate Gerardo Gaudiano declared victory in Villahermosa, the Tabasco state capital, as unofficial results show him with a commanding lead in the election for municipal president. With the initial vote count completed, Gaudiano had earned 43 percent of the vote, followed by Morena candidate Octavio Romero who barely edged out PRI candidate Liliana Madrigal (both with just over 25 percent).
The state electoral authorities are expected to issue the final official results Wednesday although a few minor complaints were filed and will have to be adjudicated.
The December election for this important municipality (comprised of the capital and six surrounding cities) was annulled after an election tribunal determined that state election authorities had acted improperly.
