Chemists at the University of Idaho have found that hops — one of the principal ingredients that gives beer its bitterness — contains compounds that can fight diseases, including cancer. The researchers are hoping those compounds may be extracted or synthesized in order to create new medicines.

Project leader Dr. Kristopher Waynant said in a statement, “When researchers extract healthful chemicals from hops, they first have to determine whether they have separated out the specific compounds they're interested in.

“But if you can figure out how to make these compounds from scratch, you know they are the right ones.”

The two compounds in question are humulones, which contain anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, and lupulones, also believed to be have health benefits.
