Drug and gang-related violence has long been a problem in Mexico, but tourist destinations were generally spared from danger. Not so anymore as Acapulco is becoming known as much for its killings as its coastal resorts. (CCTVAmerica)

Violence has continued unabated in Acapulco despite a stepped-up security presence and high hotel occupancy rates in the week leading up to Easter Sunday, spoiling authorities' efforts to revamp that Mexican Pacific resort city's image.

Five more deaths attributable to gangland violence - three who were killed at a bar on the Acapulco-Mexico City highway and two whose bodies were found in the city's Ciudad Renacimiento neighborhood - added to the city's crime statistics on Wednesday.

On Monday, gunmen burst into the offices of Acapulco's Potable Water and Sewage Commission, killing one employee and seriously wounding another.

While those incidents occurred in areas far removed from the port city's tourist center, the coastal zone has not been immune from the scourge of violent crime.

As recently as Monday, two fishermen were slain on La Angosta beach in front of tourists strolling through the area. Days earlier, a man was found killed execution-style on Papagayo beach.

Criminals seem undeterred by 87 percent hotel occupancy rates this Easter Week in that tourist destination and the deployment of more than 4,000 police to bolster security.
