Relatives of the 43 education students who disappeared in southern Mexico in 2014 planted forget-me-nots this weekend in Mexico City to mark 18 months since the young people went missing.

"As long as there are people with dignity and courage, the resistance and the flame will remain lit ... we are going to plant 43 plants as a symbol of the life that is here and (to show) that nothing and no one is going to keep us from the truth and justice," Felipe de la Cruz, a spokesman for the missing students' families, said in a statement sent to media outlets.

About 100 people gathered on Saturday at the makeshift memorial on Mexico City's iconic Paseo de la Reforma that protesters have labeled an "anti-monument" to plant flowers in memory of the 43 Ayotzinapa Rural Normal School students who disappeared on Sept. 26, 2014, in Iguala, a city in the southern state of Guerrero.

The demonstrations then moved on to Alameda Park, where they engaged in a series of political and cultural events.

De la Cruz said the missing students' relatives wanted the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, or IACHR, Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts, or GIEI, to continue working on the case.
