In late March, Mexico signaled its intent to bid for 2026 World Cup (Bonjour Teratai)

Mexico hasn’t hosted a World Cup since 1986, but that could all change very soon.

According to Mexican newspaper Récord, Mexico wants to host the 2026 World Cup, and intends to chat with the FIFA congress in May to make that happen. Renovated stadiums in Monterrey, Guadalajara, Torreón, Puebla and Toluca may give this plan a realistic chance.

“Being the host of the biggest party in the world is an honor and it means a lot for this country,” FEMEXFUT President Decio de María said.

If FIFA were to hold the 2026 World Cup in Mexico, this would be the country’s third time hosting the game in its history, with the first two taking place in 1970 and 1986. This notwithstanding 30 years ago, Mexico was the first country to host the tournament.
