'Days of Revolt': Young Mexican Activists Rewriting a Destroyed Constitution (teleSUR English)

A group of Mexican non-governmental organizations denounced a pattern of arbitrary arrests and abusive treatment of rights activists and urged the government to heed United Nations resolutions in five of these cases dating back to 2013.

Yesica Sanchez, deputy director of the Consortium for Parliamentary Dialogue and Equality, based in the southern state of Oaxaca, said of the resolutions by the U.N.-mandated Working Group on Arbitrary Detention that they were indicative of a broader, recurrent problem in Mexico.

Sanchez added at a press conference Tuesday in this capital that it was regrettable that international institutions had to intervene and denounce arbitrary arrests, irregularities in judicial proceedings and other human rights violations instead of domestic agencies such as the National Human Rights Commission, or CNDH, Mexico's equivalent of an ombud's office.

On the contrary, she said the CNDH and similar state-level agencies on some occasions "discredited" and "stigmatized" political prisoners.

The mistreatment continues after the rights activists are jailed because these individuals are placed in maximum-security prisons, where they suffer "cruel and inhuman treatment," Sanchez said.
