Social media use rising in Mexico (Webcertain TV)

Mexico will reach the milestone of 60 million internet users by the end of 2016, an 11 percent increase compared to the 54 million users recorded at the end of last year, according to report by the Competitive Intelligence Unit (CIU) cited in local business daily El Financiero.

The increased penetration has been driven by a number of telecommunications sector initiatives, above all expansion of broadband networks to digital divide areas and improved bundles with unlimited access. In fact, a total of 50.4 percent of Mexico’s 119.5 million inhabitants will be connected to the internet by the end of the year, said the report.

Mexico’s telecommunications sector received a total of MXN 65.8 billion (around USD 3.7 billion) in private investment last year, some 34.8 percent more than 2014, according to a recent report from telecoms watchdog IFT. The growth was driven by investment in the fixed line sector, which soared by over 50 percent to MXN 47.6 billion, thanks above all to the expansion of high-speed broadband networks.
