Cancun and the Riviera Maya expect more than 39,000 for summer break this year.
According to state governor Roberto Borge, spring break and summer break are two of the most important for the region. He says that the arrival of tourists means employment for thousands of workers ranging from travel agencies and airlines to chambermaids and taxi drivers.
The seasonal summer break tourists, which are mostly Americans and Canadians, have already begun to arrive in Cancun. Borge explains that summer break tourists will continue to arrive until the end of June and stay an average of six days. During summer break, the entire travel industry will benefit around $41 million.
Each year, summer break vacationers continues to grow, especially in Cancun thanks to increased connectivity of international airports. This year, Borge says they are expecting a 14.6 percent increase or around 39,000 visitors, compared to last year’s figures of 34,000.
The director of the Trust for Tourism Promotion of the Riviera Maya and Cozumel Darío Flota Ocampo, said that “Young people who visit us are Americans who come mainly from Texas, Chicago, Philadelphia and New York.”
