Two police officers in Mexico City have become famous on social media after talking a young man out of committing suicide - by using tacos.

Anastacio Rosas and Bartolo Mendez responded to an emergency call from residents of a neighborhood in northern Mexico City, who reported that a man was threatening to jump off a pedestrian overpass.

The officers tried to calm the distressed 17-year-old who said “he had no reason to live,” according to eyewitnesses.

“Don’t do it, you're young and have a full life ahead of you,” the officers said.

After nearly an hour of attempting to convince the man to not commit suicide, he told the officers that he was not from Mexico City and so had no family or friends. He added that he was hungry and homeless.

“If you come down we will take you to eat some tacos,” the officers responded — and the persuasive power of one of Mexico's most famous foods did the rest.

Local media reports the young man came down from the bridge, was first treated by paramedics, and then taken by the officers to eat the tacos he had been promised. However, it is still unclear what kind of tacos he ate.
