In Mexico, over 10 percent of total population is over 60 years old, reveal figures released from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

This means that of the almost 122 million inhabitants in the country, about 14 million are elderly.

The Inegi details that in Mexico the ageing process was evidenced from the last decade of the last century.

Th state registering the highest index is the City of Mexico, followed by Morelos, Nayarit and Veracruz, in that order.

Meanwhile, according to the National Population Council, in the year 2000, the proportion of elderly was about seven percent, but it estimates this percentage will rise to 12.5 percent in 2020 and to 28 in 2050.
