A Mexican Senate Committee has passed amendments to the General Health Law to approve the use of marijuana for medical and research purposes.

Salvador López Brito, Director of the Health Committee, said that amendments which had been proposed by president Nieto passed by a unanimous vote.

Under the proposal the Ministry of Health is to design and implement public policies to regulate the production, research and medical use of marijuana and marijuana-based pharmaceutical drugs.

The proposed legislation did not increase the amount of marijuana that is legal to possess. It is currently 5 grams and proponents wanted to increase that amount to 28 grams.
