Neither Mexico's Government Nor Dissident Teachers Addressing Failing Education System Denise Dresser - Reforma

Political analyst, writer, and university professor, Denise Dresser, reflects on the education reform and the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers (CNTE):

• After the confrontation which left 9 dead in Oaxaca, Enrique Peña Nieto's education reform has suffered a blow which could prove fatal.

• There is another political death: that of Aurelio Nuño [Secretary of Education], whose presidential aspirations ended with the shooting in Nochixtlán.

• The arrogant attitude of the Secretary of Education has led to the collapse of a reform with good ideas and bad political implementation.

• Over decades, the Secretariat of Public Education and the Teachers' Union together created an almost unbridgeable education gap, the result of practices that it was imperative to get past: teachers’ pay, the sale of teaching positions, the colonization of government education agencies by union commissioners, inherited teaching positions and many more “acquired rights”.

• It was urgent to encourage the organized teachers to act and to find a different way of reaching agreement, with other objectives, but that would have required a political sophistication which Aurelio Nuño doesn’t possess.
