“Lucha libre” is a style of Mexican professional wrestling, where men and women dress up in costumes – which often involve vibrant, expressive masks – and put on staged fights – which often involve the participants executing gravity-defying aerial maneuvers.
The upcoming documentary Lucha Mexico aims to give a close look at the performers who take part in this spectacle that combines of live theater, performance art, and combat sport.
Lucha Mexico had its U.S. premiere at the 2015 DOC NYC film festival. It will be playing nationwide starting July 15th.
