Claudia Pavlovich’s administration is breaking barriers and has already been marked by a couple of firsts: She’s the first female governor of her state and she’s also trying to do it ethically and honestly.
It’s a challenge this soft-spoken, yet strong-willed woman has taken head-on.
“When I was a candidate, I would always hear that it’d be difficult for men to vote for me and that I wouldn’t get the support of women either. I think it’s a myth, since I won by a pretty wide margin,” Pavlovich said.
During the campaign, Javier Gándara, the ex-Sonora governor and a PAN political party member, faced claims of tax evasion linked to his alleged ownership of nine homes in the United States. He was also under federal investigation over the disappearance of millions of pesos of public funds.
Pavlovich herself was accused by PAN members of embezzlement, extortion, and bribery.
But now as governor, she has vowed to lead her state ethically and without corruption, no easy feat in Mexico, the known home of the “mordida,” which more or less translates into bribery. Down south, pesos usually can do the talking.
