Is Mexican cactus water the new super drink? (Fox News)

Claims made for expensive 'super waters' that are being pushed as a healthy alternative to fizzy drinks have been dismissed as 'nonsense.'

'Naturally refreshing' coconut water came first and is now at the center of an industry worth 60 million a year in the UK alone. It was followed by water tapped from the birch trees of Latvia and more recently bottles of bamboo water arrived on shelves. Now Waitrose is to start selling cactus water, which is harvested from the prickly pear cacti found in Mexico's Sonoran Desert.

Bold health claims for the drinks — made on the manufacturers' websites, in health blogs and in promotional articles — suggest they can do everything from cure hangovers to strengthen teeth. However, academics insist these waters are not as super as the hype suggests.

Mike Lean, professor of human nutrition at Glasgow University, said there was no scientific evidence to support many of the alleged health benefits. 'It is all nonsense and should be challenged legally,' he said.

Bizarrely, some boast of the fact that they are free of fat, artificial colors, added sugar and that they are suitable for vegans. The same could be said of tap water.
