In a moment that was the culmination of a long and acrimonious GOP primary contest, Donald Trump accepted his party’s nomination to be their presidential candidate.
Trump delivered a lengthy speech that often focused on illegal immigration, one of his hallmark campaign issues and one that he made prominent from the time he launched his campaign last year.
“Nearly 180,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records, ordered deported from our country, are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens,” Trump said. “They are being released by the tens of thousands into our communities with no regard for the impact on public safety or resources.”
The billionaire described a United States in crisis, and said repeatedly that come January 2017, if elected president, he would take it in a new direction that would tighten border security, get tough on terrorists, bring jobs back to the United States from overseas, and create more opportunities for all Americans, among other things.
But it was his vow to get tough on illegal immigration that got some of the loudest cheers from the crowd, which chanted “Build the wall, build the wall!”
