Rameses II, a Tijuana cartoonist who for 27 years has dedicated himself to "humbly communicate the news through my pencil strokes" was censured and fired by the San Diego Union Tribune, when he wanted to publish a cartoon which criticized the warlike speech of Donald Trump against Mexico. Taking advantage of the exodus of foreigners and Mexicans who are fleeing violence and poverty in their countries to ask for refuge in the United States, Tijuana residents are also targeting this as an easier way to cross the border without documents.
Francisco Rueda Gómez, state Secretary of the Interior, confirmed they have now identified cases of Tijuana residents who want to move across the border by seeking asylum and refugee status at this border.
He stressed that even though these people are at first received by American authorities, this does not guarantee they will be able to stay, on the contrary, most are being rejected and then deported.
"There have been Mexicans, some just from Tijuana, and from different Mexican states who believe there is the chance to get political asylum and ask for it, but I have to say, they are being rejected."
He added that the flow of foreign immigrants has dropped in the past few weeks some 40%, and how the phenomenon is reversed, and the first applicants for asylum are returning.
The foreigners are being deported by airplane to their countries of origin.
Rosario Lozada Romero, director of Attention to Migrants in Tijuana, emphasized that at least 30 families who had asked for refuge in the United States in May, have now been repatriated back to Tijuana.
