Mexico Finance Minister Luis Videgaray is leaving the government, Finance Ministry spokeswoman Claudia Algorri said on Wednesday, citing no reason for the departure.

Videgaray, who pushed through a tax increase in 2013 and championed the opening of the nation’s oil industry after 75 years of state monopoly as a way to boost growth, isn’t taking another post in the administration, Algorri told Bloomberg News.

Videgaray, 48, has worked for President Enrique Pena Nieto since the president first became a governor in the State of Mexico in 2005. Analysts have seen him as one of the president’s closest advisers and even a potential candidate to follow in his footsteps in the national election of 2018.

The Mexican peso extended its loss, falling 0.6 percent to 18.3884 per dollar in morning trading in New York.
