Dudleya hendrixii – Jimi Hendrix’s Dudleya (SciNews)
Researchers have recently paid tribute to rock legend Jimi Hendrix by naming a new plant species after him.
The plant, named Dudleya hendrixii, is found only in Baja California, Mexico and can grow up to 1 foot tall. D hendrixii, is a thin, stalky plant with pinkish-white succulent flowers. These tiny flowers die in summer and bloom again in fall.
The plant was discovered by Mark Dodero who was then a graduate student at San Diego State University and now he is working as a senior biologist at a San Diego environmental consulting firm.
Dodero was listening to Hendrix’s song "Voodoo Child" at the very moment he found the rare plant. He and study co-author Stephen McCabe decided to name it after Jimi Hendrix.
Unfortunately, the newly discovered plant is already in danger of becoming extinct. The plant grows only a couple of acre areas and factors like grazing, farming, construction of housing society and presence of vehicles off the road combined could wipe out the entire species. Study authors urge Mexican officials and conservation groups to take all necessary steps to protect the threatened plant species and to expand its popultion.
