Update: Mexico Probing 'Brutal Sin' Alleging Cancer Kids Given Water, Not Chemo (UPI)
Children with cancer were treated with “fake chemotherapy,” in the southeastern Mexican state of Veracruz, due to budget shortfall and diversion of resources during the past administration, Governor Miguel Angel Yunes revealed this week.
“We already have results from a laboratory that pointed out that the medicine given to children, a chemotherapy that was given to children, was not really a drug, but an inert compound, it was practically distilled water," the governor said.
This criminal activity, which has raised outrage among Mexicans, was conducted by the health ministry, under the administration of fugitive former governor Javier Duarte, who resigned from his post in October to face corruption charges and disappeared a week later.
Governor Yunes described the action as a “brutal sin” and an "attack" on the lives of children and cancer patients. He added that once the analysis of those chemotherapies concludes, complaints and legal actions will be taken.
He did not say how many people were affected by this scandal but said more details will be revealed in time.
