New research has looked into what couples' first holiday destinations could mean for their future relationship (or lack of it). The study found that couples who have their first holiday in sunny Mexico are the most likely to break up.
The team at sunshine.co.uk polled 2,187 people: 1,056 of the respondents had broken up with a partner within the last six months while 1,131 were in a happy relationship of three years or more.
Those who had broken up with their partner were asked where they had spent their fist holiday and there seemed to be a trend.
A staggering 21% of people who had broken up with their partners in the last six months said their first romantic trip was to Mexico. And Ibiza followed closely behind, with 17% of singletons saying they took their first trip to the Balearic island.
The top five break-up destinations were as follows:
1. Mexico - 21%
2. Ibiza - 17%
3. Portugal - 12%
4. Cape Verde - 9%
5. Lanzarote - 7%
Those in happy long-term relationships were also asked were they spent there first holiday and the results were entirely different:
1. Tenerife - 18%
2. Italy - 15%
3. Cyprus - 13%
4. Majorca - 10%
5. Mainland Spain - 9%
