Mexico is a land of contrast. Some parts of the country are popular tourist destinations, while others are torn apart by drugs, abduction, murder, and theft. And though the country has a relatively strong economy, large swaths of the population still live in deep poverty.

The Mexican Diocese of Tapachula has its own unique challenges, too. It shares a border with Guatemala and is crossed by many migrants on their way to the United States. The Church offers pastoral support to these people, as well as legal and material aid, emergency counseling, and temporary accommodations. But between these services and natural disasters, like earthquakes, tornadoes, and landslides, the parishes are economically overwhelmed.

The priests of the diocese do not have a regular salary, and their faithful have very little to give. And so they are heavily dependent on our Mass stipends; without them, the priests could not afford their insurance or retirement pensions. They are profoundly grateful for our help, and altogether, we have promised their bishop Mass stipends equal to $31,273 for 106 priests.

Bishop Jaime Jalderò has written to thank us: “On behalf of our diocese, we want to thank you for helping our brother priests around the world in fulfilling their pastoral mission. May God continue to bless you, and may our Mother, the Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe, intercede for you all.“

Helping persecuted and needy Christians is of the utmost priority to Aid to the Church in Need. Whether through Mass stipends, the funding of priestly formation, existential help for religious members or the formation of faith among the laity – we sponsor thousands of brothers and sisters every year so that they, in turn, can support the faithful.
