MEXICO CITY - President Calderón inaugurated the Hemato-Oncology and Research Unit of the Federico Gómez Children’s Hospital, which will improve the diagnosis, care and treatment of child patients with cancer from Mexico City and many other cities in Mexico attended at this hospital.
The new building will provide specialized treatment for children suffering from diseases such as leukemia, lymphomas, tumors of the central nervous system, soft tissue tumors and malignant liver and kidney tumors. Patients will benefit from state-of-the-art technology, as well as optimal conditions for their cure and recovery.
The Hemato-Oncology and Research Unit is equipped with 40 hospital beds and 12 cubicles for short-stay chemotherapy, 25 cubicles for chemotherapy, 10 consulting rooms, a bone marrow transplant unit and two rooms with special isolation for the administration of radioactive dugs. It also has a research area where child cancer specialists will be trained. A total investment of over 300 million pesos was required.
The president remarked that Mexican children are everyone’s responsibility and that their health is essential to the present and future of the country. That is why this administration has worked to save their lives by providing them with friendly, quality care. In February 2008, the decision was made to provide all children with cancer with free treatment through the Popular Insurance Scheme. Until a few years ago, seven out of every ten children suffering from leukemia stopped treatment. This trend has been reversed, since nowadays, 8 out of 10 children are saved.
