Greetings from the International Gathering for the Defense of Water, hosted by the Yaqui Traditional Authority, in Vicam Pueblo, Sonora, Mexico.
The gathering, yesterday and today, Nov. 20-21, 2012, has brought together Indigenous Peoples from all areas of Mexico. In solidarity with the Zapatistas, Indigenous speakers included Yaqui leaders, and Ofelia Rivas, O'odham, one of the representatives of Mexico's Indigenous National Congress.
Rivas sang a sacred O'odham water song. She said the message of the song is, "Water is a sacred part of our life and we must honor the sacredness of the water."
Speakers spoke, and read statements, on the defense of water and upholding the dignity and solidarity of Indigenous Peoples, here in the area where Yaqui are fighting the Mexican government to prevent the theft of their water from the Rio Yaqui for use in the major city of Hermosillo.
The night filled with joy and the music of revolution as a Michoacan band played. The music of Michoacan followed the traditional Yaqui dancers in the evening. Yaqui women prepared traditional soup and tortillas for the evening meal.
