The recent inauguration of the president of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, was marred by violence. Over 500 people, protesting against the return to power of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), threw Molotov cocktails and other objects at the police, who responded with tear gas.

Elsewhere in the Mexican capital, protestors looted shops, hotels and restaurants. Nearly 100 people were arrested and 76 were injured.

But now reports are emerging that the police not only used excessive force to end the protests, but they also tortured demonstrators. One of them was Alejandro Cortés Zaragoza, a 27-year-old student. He and a group of other students were picked up that day, even though they weren't involved in any protests.
