TLAXCALA – President Enrique Peña Nieto distributed blankets and food to poor Mexican families Wednesday as a part of the federal government’s Winter Protection Program.
The program is an initiative to help those in need survive upcoming harsh winter weather.
The president said that although poverty exists throughout Mexico, no one should resign themselves to a life of marginalization.
Alongside Secretary of Social Development Rosario Robles, Peña Nieto talked about Mexico’s economic potential, and said it was important for the three government levels to work together for change.
“Mexico has huge potential, but it is important that ... we create opportunities and possibilities that help us grow as a nation. We cannot resign ourselves to marginalization, poverty and social backwardness.”
He went on to say that his administration’s policies will not be evaluated by official reports, but instead by what he and his team hear from real people in the streets. “It’s about going out, visiting the fields, getting our shoes dirty and listening to people and their concerns, all of which will contribute to my administration’s public policies.”
Peña Nieto said that his political agenda would create a more just and egalitarian Mexico, in which all government authorities work together to meet citizens’ needs.
