January 6 is celebrated in Mexico as Nurses Day, under the physician Jose Castro Villagrana, director of Juarez Hospital of Mexico, instituted in 1931. Villagrana described the presence of nurses as a "Christmas present" for patients.

By presidential decree, the title of the Executive Federal grants to nurses different awards:

  • Nursing Merit Award Graciela Cordero Arroyo , since 2006.
  • Nursing Recognition Cerisola Maria Guadalupe Salcido , since 2008.
  • Nursing Recognition María Suárez Vázquez , from 2012.
  • Recognition performance since 1998.

These awards are given to highlight the scientific and humanistic contributions of nursing as a fundamental part of continuous quality improvement and patient safety, awarded to men and women featured in their career for his dedication to service.

This year, President Enrique Peña Nieto will lead the commemorative ceremony, Monday morning at 11 o'clock.
