In April, the reforms made to the Federal Telecommunications Act will take effect. Cell phone companies will have to bill their rate plans based on seconds, explained Mauricio Sahuí Rivero, coordinator of the PRI federal deputies in Yucatan.
Sahuí stressed that with these changes the users will have a greater range of possibilities to choose a cell phone plan according to their needs, while preserving the free choice of consumers, to minimize their spending.
Sahuí explained that Mexico has 79 million cell phone users, on average every costumer makes five cell phone calls a day, between one minute and one minute and a half.
“This builds a traffic volume on calls per day for over 592 million minutes, of which more than 197 million minutes correspond to fractions of seconds that are rounded and billed as full minutes.”
Based on these calculations, Sahui Rivero continues, it is estimated that cell phone companies have a profit of 987 million pesos a day, for air time not consumed by the user. With the amendments and additions to the Article 60 of the Federal Telecommunications Act, the cell phone user will be protected, as the competition between companies will result in better offers for the public.
