MEXICO CITY – The nation’s leftist and conservative parties, at each others throats for most of the Calderón era, agree on one thing – that the councilors of the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) must be completely replaced.
Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) Deputy Coordinator Silvano Aureoles Conejo said Thursday that the PRD would work with conservative National Action Party (PAN) to replace the leaders of the nation’s electoral authority before their terms expire.
Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) Chamber of Deputies leader Francisco Arroyo Vieyra said that he received a copy of Sergio García Ramírez’s resignation as on IFE councillor on Thursday.
The document was turned over to the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) to oversee the naming of a new councillor.
Arroyo Vieyra called the resignation letter “slippery” because it doesn’t specify when García Ramírez will officially leave his position.
“This Congress, this Chamber of Deputies, has been distinguished, up until now, by the intention of its legislative bodies to come to agreement ... I hope that the parties develop a process quickly and that we have a new councillor shortly,” Arroyo Vieyra said.
Silvano Aureoles said that new councillors must be chosen carefully and that current councillors must be banned from reelection – especially García Ramírez.
PAN Deputy Coordinator Luis Alberto Villarreal said that García Ramírez should stop drawing his salary from the IFE.
