The House of Representatives Thursday passed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) 286 to 138, extending protections to gay, lesbian and transgender people, as well as Native Americans and immigrants. The bill now heads to the president’s desk to be signed.
A GOP version of the bill that did not include protections for Native communities and LGBT individuals was defeated 166 to 257.
The renewal of the Violence Against Women Act, which expired in 2011, will allow funding to continue for battered women's shelters and programs that prosecute perpetrators of sexual assault and domestic violence. The new version of the bill also covers stalking, spyware, and video surveillance; and ensures that LGBT, Native American, and immigrant victims can access services and protections.
