MEXICO CITY – President Enrique Peña Nieto spoke out against the sale of assault weapons on Tuesday.
“We think there should be stronger regulation on the sale of high-caliber and high-velocity weapons,” Peña Nieto said after signing a cooperation agreement with New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key at Mexico City’s Chapultepec Castle.
The president said he will pursue the issue on an international level.
“It has to be said, both countries are pacifists and because of that we have committed ourselves to defending peace in international forums, particularly the United Nations, so that there is a treaty on the sale of arms that will allow international regulation to be imposed on the free sale of high-caliber weapons, which, unfortunately, puts the security of several countries at risk,” the president said.
Peña Nieto is not the first Mexican president to call for stricter gun laws. Former President Felipe Calderón asked the United States on several occasions during his six-year term to reinstate its 1994 assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004 under former President George W. Bush.
