SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Clad in military regalia, a living history group commemorated the fallen Mexican soldiers of the Alamo on Sunday morning in hopes of providing balance to a pivotal, historic event that has assumed a more one-sided reputation.

“We're doing this in order to keep our culture, our language and our history alive,” featured speaker Juan Chavira said at an event called Remember the Mexican Soldier. “The tragedy is that one side has celebrated itself more than the other.”

The event was one of several presentations that were part of the 177th anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo, sponsored by the San Antonio Living History Association. Sunday's ceremony, the third annual recognition of the contribution of Mexican soldiers, was put on by the El Primer Batallón De Mexico living history group for about 100 spectators.
