The 38th edition of the Tourist Tianguis of Mexico, located in the state of Puebla, reached its end Wednesday, where Mexican tourism was heavily promoted after falling five levels internationally.
With 648 buyers and 500 exhibitors from 42 countries, the Tourist Tianguis 2013, created as the business platform for the largest sector in Latin America, succeeded with flying colors last year, and provided a good stepping stone for promoting Mexican tourism.
From 2000 to 2009 this nation went from seventh to tenth place in number of tourists received, according to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and this year, preliminary data suggest that it could fall two positions more, i.e; to 12th place, according to the national representative for this sector, Claudia Ruiz.
This means that in just over 10 years, five nations have surpassed Mexico as a tourist destination.
The world crisis, rising fuel prices and insecurity from the violence of organized crime are factors negatively affecting Mexico as a tourist destination.
During the tourism event in Puebla, the goals were to boost the sector in terms of more deals and increasing the number of travelers, now around 23 million with a foreign exchange earnings of 12 billion USD.
For the first time the Tourist Tianguis of Mexico has developed at a non-beach destination, which caused some concern, but the results were a reflection of the need to show visitors a new face of the country, according to its organizers.
The more than 3,000 rooms designed to accommodate participants in the meeting were insufficient and some participants had to stay in nearby cities like Cholula, Atlixco or Tlaxcala.
The Tourist Tianguis 2014 will be held in the Caribbean state of Quintana Roo and its governor, Roberto Borge said it is working with operators, developers, airlines and tourism entrepreneurs in Cancun and the Riviera Maya to start promoting the event.
