MEXICO CITY - Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto attended the naturalization ceremony for 178 foreign citizens, including people from Chile, Uruguay, the Czech Republic and Morocco.

"Today, they receive this certificate and with it they become proud Mexicans. The door opens for new opportunities and great expectations with it, and I am sure that each of you have this in your hearts," the president said.

Naturalization certificates were presented to the 20 new citizens who attended the ceremony and a symbolic presentation was made to the 158 other naturalized citizens.

"Adopting a new homeland is one of the most important decisions that a person can make," Peña Nieto said, urging the new citizens to "contribute to the transformation Mexico needs to release its potential, all of its ability."

Article 30 of the Mexican Constitution provides for the naturalization of foreigners as citizens.

A total of 2,602 people became naturalized citizens in 2011, the government says.
