MEXICO CITY - Consumer confidence in Mexico was slightly higher in March than a year before, but fell sharply from February, the National Statistics Institute, or Inegi said Thursday.
The confidence index, which gauges consumers' views on the current and future economic situation, as well as their ability to buy big-ticket items, was 95.4 last month compared with 93.4 in March of 2012. The index fell 1.6% from February, however, in seasonally adjusted terms, for a second straight month of declines.
A slowdown in inflation in the final quarter of 2012, and an increase in formal employment levels, contributed to confidence in January reaching its highest level since before the 2008-2009 economic crisis.
Inflation picked up again in February, however, and in March rose to 4.1%, above the central bank's 2%-4% target range.
