The Campaign for Youth Justice (CFYJ) is dedicated to ending the practice of trying, sentencing, and incarcerating youth under 18 in the adult criminal justice system. (CFYJ)

In 2003, the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) passed Congress unanimously, banning the practice of housing youth in general prison populations.

Problem solved, right? Wrong.

The 100,000 youth in adult jails across the country are more at risk for sexual abuse and rape than any other group. Not surprisingly, children in adult prisons are 36 times more likely to commit suicide. Under PREA, children are required to be in protected custody. In practice, however, this can be incredibly difficult.
