Mexico’s got plenty of colourful exports that most Canadians enjoy regularly, some all at once, like tequila, Tabasco sauce and sombreros, for example. However, there’s also some excellent stuff that, naturally, comes with way less regret.
The music of singer and social activist Lila Downs is one of those things, and she’s bringing it to Vancouver on April 21 with a program that deftly combines traditional Mexican music with blues, jazz and soul.
“Lila Downs is a rare musician who has taken a very specific, very special cultural heritage and adapted it for world stages without sacrificing any authenticity,” says co-managing director of the Chan Centre, Joyce Hinton.
... Lila Downs performs Sunday, April 21 (7 p.m.) at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (at UBC). Tickets $36 to $72 via ticketmaster.ca.
